Marxist Theory

Oppression

Is a question of strength,
of unshed tears,
of being trampled under,
and always, always,
remembering you are human.

Look deep to find the grains of hope and strength,
and sing, my brothers and sisters,

and sing. The sun will share
your birthdays with you behind bars,
the new spring grass

like fiery spears will count your years,
as you start into the next year;
endure my brothers, endure my sisters
.

Marxist theory is an interpretation viewed from an economic or social class, often viewed as the haves and the have-nots.

In this poem Jimmy Santiago Baca tells of his oppression and time in jail, and about how even after you have been oppressed you can not show weakness, you can only stay optimistic and wait. In the fourth line "and always always remember you are human" shows how taking ones freedom away can be dehumanizing , that there is a higher class of people trying to control every aspect of your life.  This higher class can treat their less fortunate members of society like livestock, filling their troughs with food stamps and prison food, fencing them in with walls and barbed wire and exploiting there resources to the market.  --Chris
